conjures around my head. You’re saving my life

for later, sang the cold black chickadee

in the flight path of your hands. Later, I don’t

recognize pics of me on my phone, face heavy

with fire, eyes whistling the true song

of the liver, its psychotropic toxins, its poison

arrow, its bird, its poetry. I’ve been dead

before, says the body. I love you more

than anything. In your own home. Without

protection. I love you, I said. I love you.

And that is the song this world is singing.

A crown of stars. Their tiny open mouths, a wind

wheezing between lobes. This is where they go,

I tell my children, hands full of dominoes.

Meaning bodies, their joy and inevitability,

our blinkering mass of atoms and poetry,

morning’s threadbare hospital gown of sky.

I’ll never be able to say everything I want

to say, is what I want, finally, to say. I’m not

special. I’m just here. And here… and here…
